What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is simply placeholder text used in the printing and typesetting industry. Since Lorem Ipsum was created back in the 1500s when an unidentified printer took a galley of type and rearranged it to create a type specimen book, it has been the standard industry dummy text. Not only has it survived for five centuries, but it has also undergone the transition to electronic typesetting, remaining largely unchanged. It gained even greater popularity after 1960 with the rise in the commercial availability of Letraset sheets that featured passages of Lorem Ipsum. Today several desktop publishing systems, such as Aldus PageMaker, have versions of Lorem Ipsum as part of their software.

Why do we use it?

Numerous studies indicate a reader’s response to a page is often not just dependent on its content but also very much dependent on how the layout of the information affects the reader’s focus and experience. The intent of using Lorem Ipsum is to have letter distributions that are mostly at the same frequency as an actual block of text to simulate the appearance of visually reading English. Consequently, several desktop publishing programs and web page/website designers have adopted Lorem Ipsum as their default template and continue to do so today. A simple search of “lorem ipsum” will uncover many examples of new or in-development websites. You can also find many variations of the standard Lorem Ipsum text that have occurred over the years, either by chance or through the introduction of humor or creativity.

Where does it come from?

Many people believe that Lorem Ipsum is merely a random assortment of letters. In fact, it has roots in a piece of Classical Latin literature dating back to 45 B.C.E. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, identified many of the difficult words in Lorem Ipsum text, including “consectetur.” He searched all of the references to the word in classical literature and was able to locate the source of Lorem Ipsum’s text. He located it in sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil), written by Cicero in 45 B.C.E. “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” is an ethical theory treatise and was amongst the most popular texts written at this time in the Renaissance period. The phrase “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” is derived directly from section 1.10.32 of Cicero’s work.

The typical Lorem Ipsum text has been in use since the 1500s

In creating De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, Cicero wrote Section 1.10.32 in 45 BC.

The author will explain the information written by Plato, the truth-finder and “architect of the perfect life.” The blame placed on pleasure for causing actions and, therefore, punishment is misguided. It is not pleasure itself that people do not want to experience, but the fact that the greatest amount of punishment will be inflicted upon those who cannot or will not follow the correct path of reason to enjoy the benefits of pleasure. Furthermore, the author states that no person will willingly pursue or want to achieve pain. Pain is not sought out the same way pleasure is; therefore, this idea of people wanting pain will only produce a situation in which some people want to obtain something through pain and hard work, while others will never have such an opportunity.

The easiest way to describe the work of an architect is that he makes a way for people to fulfill their desires, and that people will only exercise their bodies to provide themselves with a benefit or reward. Therefore, if no person were to benefit from a particular laborious or strenuous activity, then no person would validly have the right to criticize the person who wants to achieve the pleasure while avoiding the pain.

But I have to tell you how all this false conception of condemning pleasure and glorifying pain was conceived, and I will give you a full narrative of the system and explain the very doctrines of this great discoverer of the truth, the architect of human happiness. Nobody refuses, dislikes, or fears pleasure as such, since it is pleasure, but because people who do not know how to go about pleasure are faced with the results of extremely painful consequences. There is no longer, also, a lover or seeker or desire to acquire pain as such, because it is pain, but sometimes there are conditions under which toil and pain may win him some great pleasure. To give a frivolous illustration, why would one of us ever engage in a strenuous physical exertion unless we extract something out of it? Yet who is to blame—those who prefer to taste a pleasure that offers no vexing after-effect or those who wish to escape an evil that leaves behind no effect, pleasure-in-pain?

We both condemn and consider most deserving of righteous hatred those who, blinded by greed and lulled and corrupted by the temptations of present pleasures, are unable to recognize the pains and frustrations they could avoid. Equally guilty are those who shirk obligations due to weakness of mind, seeking to escape effort and discomfort. The distinction between these attitudes is indeed straightforward and obvious. In leisure, when we are free to choose as we wish and nothing prevents us from doing what we most enjoy, all pleasure is to be embraced and all pain avoided. Yet, at times, either because of obligations or the demands of life, we must forgo pleasures and accept pains. Thus, a conscious person is bound by these decisions, so that by abstaining from greater pleasures, they may gain other benefits, or by enduring greater pains, they may ultimately reject them.

On the contrary, we rightly condemn and disapprove of those who, deceived and demotivated by the allure of the moment, are so intoxicated by lust that they cannot foresee the inevitable confusion and trouble; and we equally blame those who neglect their duty through weakness of will, that is, by shrinking from effort and hardship. These are straightforward and clear cases. When we have free time, when our freedom of choice is unimpeded, and when nothing prevents us from doing what we are best suited to enjoy, every pleasure is good, and every pain is to be avoided. Nevertheless, in certain situations, due to the demands of duty or the requirements of business, it often happens that pleasures must be renounced and hardships endured. The wise person, therefore, never abandons the principle of this choice: to reject some pleasures to gain greater pleasures, or to endure pain to avoid greater suffering.
